My Writing Life

For about twelve weeks a year I work in schools as a visiting author. The rest of the time I’m a writer. Every day, I wake up and exercise for an hour, drink a cup of tea and then settle in to write. Some days I sit on my deck under a tree. Other mornings I perch on a stone wall at the park and watch runners and baby carriages and dogs parade past out of the corner of my eye as I create. Writing helps me notice the beauty of the world around me, so my senses come alive. I can see the setting of my story in my mind, hear a character’s voice and even feel the main character’s emotions. After lunch, I meander inside to my writing studio and continue writing, my computer balanced on my lap. There’s no doubt about it...writing touches my heart.
